EUROSAF First 18 SE & Seascape18 European Championship: together again
May 30, 2024BioDesign Foundation is sustainability partner of EUROSAF

– First collaboration project in Los Alcázares, Spain
– Clean-up of the city just before the Formula Kite European Championship
– Expansion of the collaboration is being planned
The European Sailing Federation collaborated with the BioDesign Foundation for a first sustainability project: On 9 and 10 March, just a few days before the 2024 Formula Kite European Championship took place in the EUROSAF Sailing Academy Centre in Murcia, more than 150 people came together to clean up the Spanish town.
The BioDesign Foundation, which promotes research and implementation of solutions and actions to ecological challenges, created “The Custodians Plastic Race” to clean the planet from plastic dispersed in nature through coordinated, simultaneous and capillary interventions and clean-ups in places where waste needs to be removed.
Thanks to the collaboration with EUROSAF, the initiative landed once again in Spain, in Los Alcázares – Mar Menor. The cleanup operation took place with the support of the Los Alcázares municipality, volunteers and local associations.
“The Custodians Plastic Race could become a sustainable activity of each sailing event under the EUROSAF umbrella. This would support spreading this innovative format throughout the continent,” says EUROSAF president Josep M. Pla.
The clean-up in Los Alcázares in numbers:
Date: | 9 and 10 March 2024 |
Total participants: | over 150 people |
Total kg of waste collected: | 3,890 kg, divided into plastic bottles, packaging, beer bottles, construction debris, cable ties, electronic material |
Materials collected: | plastic (PET, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC), glass, paper |
The 2024 Formula Kite European Championship, which took place from 15 to 24 March 2024 in the EUROSAF Sailing Academy, also benefited from the partnership. Presenting this action format during European Championships – which have great international relevance – spreads the important message that our sport requires a healthy sea, a clean city, citizens and participants actively involved in taking care of their territory.
