The French Ian Garreta wins and confirms himself as European Champion.
After five days of particularly hard-fought duels, Frenchman Ian Garreta won the EUROSAF Match Racing, Open European Championship in Marina di Ravenna, repeating his win just six months ago in Bedanne.
The championship was organized by the Circolo Velico Ravennate, in collaboration with EUROSAF and the Italian Sailing Federation, sailed with the TOM 28s owned by the club. The event enjoyed favourable weather conditions that allowed the completion of the programme set out in the Notice of Race. All credit is due to the professionalism of the Race Committee, led by Costanzo Villa, and the Umpire team, coordinated by Frenchman Arnaud Mante: the work of both was particularly appreciated by the participants and the Organizing Committee.
Ian Garrett, the French skipper who qualified for the finals as third, overcame Rocco Attili, winner of the Round Robin and reigning Italian champion, in the final with a score of two to zero. At the same time, in the final for third and fourth place, Poland’s Patrik Zbroja beat Timotee Rossi to take the third step of the continental podium.
“Congratulations to Ian Garreta for his continental encore and more generally to all those who took part in the EUROSAF Match Racing, European Championship. We are very satisfied with the work done by the Race Committee and the whole organization in general, starting with our volunteers: It is not every day that you finish a match racing event with the completion of four Round Robins and the best recognition of the efforts were the compliments received from the participants. We had wonderful days of sailing, long and intense during which the ever-reliable TOM 28s confirmed themselves as one of the best boats for one-on-one duels,” commented Matteo Plazzi, president of the Circolo Velico Ravennate.
