Sailing in the city of Vienna
The third edition of a EUROSAF Club Sailing Championship is taking place in Vienna, only a few minutes away from St. Stephens Cathedral. The event starts today and lasts until Sunday afternoon. The competitors sail on Sunbeam 22.1 boats, which are also used for the Austrian Sailing League.
„We want to re-establish sailing events here on the Neue Donau on a place that officially is called Sailing Harbour South but wasn’t used for our sport for the last 20 years. That’s why we put so much effort in organizing an international event as highlight of a three weeks sailing festival,“ said Markus Hiebeler, the event organizer. Teams from Austria, Bulgaria, Italy and the United Nations will race for the medals in very short courses. Spectators can watch every move on board from the shore, either relaxing on the Vienna City Beach Club or walking aside the shoreline only few minutes away from the subway.
United Nations Sailing Team
Vienna is one of the UN headquarters, and they also have a worldwide sailing club. In Vienna this club has a long tradition, but is competing for the first time in a European Championship. While the sailors of the UN sailing club see the venue from their workplace, the team of Bulgaria had the longest journey to come to Vienna. After a 14 hours drive they had their first training session yesterday in the afternoon.
