July 4, 2022Match Racing Open Europeans: Swiss team claims Gold
Eric Monnin is the winner of this year’s European match racing title. The Swiss sailor, current number one in the world ranking, won the final with a score of 3 to 0 against the French team with skipper Aurelien Pierroz, number twenty-four in the match race ranking. The French made it into the finals by defeating the Danish Jeppe Borch, winner of the Round Robin, in the semi-finals.
For Monnin it was the third European title, “It is not our first time on the top of the podium, but we are really happy,” commented the Swiss champion. “After two years of only a few events due to the pandemic, we could not wait to return to racing at a high level. To win the title in Ravenna with its great match racing tradition has a special value to us. I want to give a big hand to my crew for the excellent work done during this event.”
The final stage of the event took place in very nice conditions of a south-easterly thermal wind between 9 and 12 knots. The last races and the prizegiving ceremony were attended by EUROSAF vice-president Marco Predieri, “We are proud and delighted to be back organizing such a prestigious match race event: we had favourable weather conditions and eleven crews that went home really happy.”
The women’s title will be given at the end of the European sailing season in the middle of October in Corfu, Greece.
